"I’m here to kick ass and drink whiskey, and pilgrim, I’m out of whiskey”⁶
After scientific research the author and his favorite drinking companion, Patroclus, established the necessity of expressing the orange peel as it complements the bourbon quite nicely. As this is a minimal cocktail, the bourbon (or rye if you’re a traditionalist) is featured quite prominently. Do not skimp on quality. After making a few yourself, you can vary the sugar content to taste.
The ice cube should be large as possible, as you want to minimize dilution.
Note: Try freezing a ¼ - ½” of water in an old fashioned glass, in lieu of large ice cube.
¹Or substitute an ounce of simple syrup (1:1 ratio)
²It is very important to thoroughly stir sugar and branch water prior to adding bourbon & bitters, as you do not want undissolved sugar crystals
⁴Some strongly say an Old Fashioned should not contain a cherry, but tasting that well soaked cherry after finishing your Old Fashioned is one of the simple joys of life
⁵But do not mash the cherry
